Class Experience

The learner will be able to understand the themes and plot points of the novel as evidenced by completion of comprehension and critical thinking activities in and out of class.
I am offering this class in response to a request! I love Dickens and this is one of his great masterpieces. I am a licensed English teacher for grades 7-12 in PA. My approach to learning allows students to interact with the material in meaningful ways to connect to their prior knowledge and makes learning fun!
Students will be assigned a weekly reading and comprehension activity.
The teacher will provide a weekly PowerPoint for students. Students should have a digital or print copy of the novel $3.99-$11.99 on
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Learners will be assessed through participation in class, through the classroom forum discussions and completion of assignments and activities.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Due to the graphic nature of some of the material, parental guidance is suggested for younger learners. There is discussions of corporal punishment, the guillotine and some other punishments used during this time period. Concepts of the French Revolution, The Reign of Terror and imprisonment in the Bastille leading to revolt, are addressed. There are scenes of torturous abuse as well as discussion of the murder of a pedestrian. There is an in-depth discussion of trial and the law of the land during the French Revolution.
Parental support is helpful in tackling and discussing these concepts to better grasp the material.
