In this class I will, with great care and compassion, review the occurrences that led to the arrest, incarceration and subsequent releases of the Central Park 5. The five young men of color, accused of raping and attacking a white woman in Central Park in 1989. I will then review the facts in the recent incident (2020) with Christian Cooper, a birdwatcher, in Central Park. We will use a Venn Diagram to capture what students identify as similarities and differences between the two incidents....
New certifications: *Diversity & Inclusion *Gender Equality *Inclusive Leadership I have spent my life in the skin I'm in. I am a black woman, born in 1978 raised just outside of Washington, DC by a single father, a black man from Georgia born in 1956. Lived experience, is experience in my book. I set clear expectations to begin my classes on sensitive topics. No one is perfect, there is the potential for hurt feelings or misunderstandings. I am skilled in creating and holding a space for everyone to be themselves, share themselves authentically and learn and grow together. Please know that in addition to being a teacher, I am a mother of three boys. I will always treat your learner the way I would want my children to be treated. I will respect everyone's unique points of view, authentically answer questions and always maintain a positive learning environment. Finally, the lines of communication are always open with me. If you or your learner have any apprehensions prior to class feel free to send me an email. I always send a note to my learners after classes and should anything stand out as something you may want to follow up on, I will include that in my note. The recordings of class are also available to you. I would caution against watching the recording and talking to your learner about things they shared or asked if they were unaware that was a possibility prior to class. Some students, when feeling safe within the conversation, may get really vulnerable. With sensitive topics I believe transparency is important. It may or may not be important for your learner to know you will see/listen to what they asked or shared during class. So, as if inviting me into your learner's world for any class isn't already requesting trust, I know that offering classes on sensitive topics ramps up the level of trust required. I am here for your learner, I am here for the collective, I will guard their hearts and expand their minds.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Depending on the age group and prior knowledge of the students in a given class, and the sensitive nature of this topic, I will be mindful of any graphic or disturbing photos/videos displayed or language used that relates to the history being covered. At the same time, I want to be give students an honest account of the subject matter I am covering. Please let me know prior to class if you have any special requests with regard to your learner. With the variety of technology we have at our disposal, I am able to share images with individual students and/or post in the classroom as attachments for you to review prior to your child viewing them. Please know that in addition to being a teacher, I am also a mother of three boys. I will always treat your learner the way I would want my children to be treated. Please be advised that more knowledgeable students may bring up concepts that are not on my class plan. I will proceed using my best judgement. I will respect everyone's unique points of view, authentically answer questions and always maintain a positive learning environment. You know your child best, I am here to support!
