Class Experience

Hello learners and grownups!

This course is a follow up to my Intro to Celtic Guitar one-time class. If your learner is already familiar with DADGAD tuning and knows at least a few chords they will be ready to start this course. If they are brand-new to DADGAD they will need to start with the one-time class before taking this five week course.

On the first day of this course we will pick up where we left off in the one-time class reviewing material as needed. We will then look at a new tune called “Pigeon on the Gate,” which will use the same chords as the tune taught in the intro class, but is a reel instead of a jig.

Each class we will learn to accompany at least one new tune. (Depending on time we may be able to squeeze in a second tune.) We will learn new chords as needed. Recordings of each tune to be accompanied will be posted in the classroom after each class, as well as diagrams of any new chords being introduced.

Week 2 We will be learning to accompany Temperence Reel.

Week 3 Miss Mcleod’s (Reel)

Week 4 Haste to the Wedding (Jig)

Week 5 Denis Murphy’s Polka

A few bonus tunes may include Morrisson’s Jig, Harvest Home Hornpipe, and The Monaghan Jig.

I grew up on a farm in Tennessee (USA) and in addition to music I also love raising rabbits, gardening, and reading! I and my husband currently live with our five beautiful children in the state of North Carolina. I am excited to be part of the Outschool family!

Music has always been a big part of my life, starting with classical piano, which I began at age 8, taking private lessons from a professor at the University of Tennessee. Later on, in my teens, my interests shifted to strings and traditional Appalachian and Celtic music. I learned from many people, including bluegrass musician Justin Moses and as a student of Jim Wood at the Jim and Inge Wood School of Music. As a young adult, I worked as a volunteer interpreter at Cade’s Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, teaching park visitors about Appalachian music. I have played professionally for weddings and other events, in restaurant house bands, as well as at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN. I have led traditional music demonstrations for public school classes, in addition to teaching privately for many years.
I am passionate about introducing young people to traditional Appalachian and Celtic music and helping them perfect their skills!
I primarily teach fiddle/violin and Appalachian old-time and Celtic music, but also bluegrass, Western swing and Texas contest-style fiddle. I also play guitar, both standard and Celtic (DADGAD), piano, mandolin, recorder, penny whistle, mountain dulcimer, ukulele and Irish bouzouki.

I see each learner as a unique individual and cater my teaching approach to best suit their needs and interests.
