This is a fun class where students will have to opportunity to gain more exposure and in depth learning about specific animals in the animal kingdom. We will specifically be focusing on animals that display black and orange color patters and animals that are bioluminescent (or glow in the dark)! We will focus on many different animal groups including insects, arachnids, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. But one thing they all have in common is their bold black and orange coloring! I will use props, stuffed animals, figurines and photographs to show each type of animal to the students. I will also use specific apps that will allow the students to hear the specific sounds the animals make. For example, they will have the opportunity to hear the song of a Baltimore oriel and the croak of a black and orange poison dart frog! Students will also learn were each animal is from on a world map and we will talk about the animal's diet and habitat as well. Lastly we will hold a discussion about Halloween costumes and students will be presented with a variety of different costume ideas inspired by the animals we learn about during the class!
Learning Goals
Students will learn about many different animals that display black and orange color patters or glow in the dark, their grouping in the animal kingdom, how these animals are classified, and about the habitat in which they live. Students will have the opportunity to share which of the animals they are familiar with and which ones are new to them. Students may also share their favorite animal that was presented. Students will also have the opportunity to expand their creativity by brainstorming how to create a black and orange animal-themed costume!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I teach classes for children ages 3-12 that focus on science, biology and nature while at the same time reinforcing important skills and concepts that they learn at school such as math, reading, geography, and more! Each class will contain an element of music and movement, art, and silliness (jokes/games/charades). Classes are delivered with warmth and enthusiasm and are also active, vibrant, hands-on and lots of fun!
With a Master’s in Science and a bachelor’s in elementary education I have learned that for children to learn well, concepts must be presented in ways that are fun and engaging. Positive reinforcement and lots of opportunities for interaction and participation are also key. I also always keep in mind that there are several different types of learning styles and tailor my classes to present each concept in a way that that caters to each learning style. For example some children are auditory learners while others are visual learners. Still others are hands-on learners! It is important to identify what type of learner each specific child is and to use many different methods of instruction to accommodate each leaning style within the classroom.
It is my passion to share what I enjoy with children. I am a mother, children’s author and teacher. I am also an animal lover. At home we have a cat, dog, parrot, several reptiles and hermit crabs! We ALL look forward to meeting the kids and sharing the natural world with them!
