Celebrate Theory: The Royal Conservatory Music Theory Level 6 (Self-Paced)
In this higher-level Celebrate Theory self-paced course, students will learn a variety of topics in music theory, including musical pitch, notation, scales, rhythm, and intervals, as well as new topics such as music history and analysis!

Families may request a certificate of completion once the course has been successfully finished. This certificate serves as a formal acknowledgment of the learner’s participation and achievement, providing a tangible record of the skills and knowledge gained throughout the course.Class Experience
Students will learn through lectures, readings, exercises, and listening assignments provided by the teacher. Students may email the instructor if there are any questions. The class time is structured according to the following topics as outlined in the Royal Conservatory of Music in Canada, which helps support the study of music theory at every state of musical development. Supplementary materials will be provided for additional practice. Assignments will be due two days prior to the scheduled meeting to allow the instructor to provide timely feedback to the learner via the Outschool classroom. Learners will have an opportunity to play games via Kahoot and Quizlet with the instructor.
Learning Goals
Students will build a strong understanding of basic music theory concepts through interactive lectures, readings, and exercises based on the Royal Conservatory of Music guidelines.
Students will learn to identify and notate musical pitches and symbols, developing a solid foundation in reading and writing music.
Syllabus

over 8 WeeksLesson 1:
𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 & 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰
This class will begin with classroom introductions and a review of the fundamentals. The topics that will be covered include different scale patterns, scale degrees, key signatures, half steps and whole steps, intervals, chords, time signatures, music terms, and signs. There will also be a review quiz that learners can take on their own outside of class.
Lesson 2:
𝐊𝐞𝐲𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬
Learners will learn about the circle of fifths, major and minor scale patterns, double sharps and double flats, key signatures, and scale degree names, how to identify the key of a melody with a key signature and without, and transposition. There will be an exploration of the repertoire.
Lesson 3:
𝐑𝐡𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐦
Learners will learn about thirty-second notes and rests, compound meter, and completing measures with rests. There will also be an exploration of repertoire with the Divertimento and Gigue.
Lesson 4:
𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐬
Learners will be introduced to augmented and diminished intervals and chromatically altered intervals. The repertoire analyzed is Echoes of November.

Currently serves at the Banting Postdoctoral Fellow (2024-2026) at Concordia University, Montréal, she is also recipient of the Fulbright and Portuguese Science & Technology awards. She is an internationally known linguist, teacher, and professional musician who has taught on four continents. Her passion for service stemmed from her work as an AmeriCorps Vista Fellow. In her spare time, she likes to play with her pet rabbit, Señor Blanco.
