In this one-time course, students will learn about the origins of Carnival in Brazil, how people celebrate with parades, music and dancing, and some ways to participate in the festivities from home.

Class Experience
In this course students will: - Approach the geography and history of Brazil - Talk about Brazilian Carnival traditions like samba, costumes, and parades - Learn some ways to participate in Carnival from home
I have a PhD in Latin American Studies and have taught introductory courses in the subject for six years, including a version that meets Louisiana state educational standards in Social Studies.
There is no homework for this one-session course, but if students want to learn more about Brazil, they are welcome to enroll in one of my longer courses or sign up for an independent research project with me!
Students may want to have some paper, and markers or crayons available (optional).
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will participate in a brief self-assessment at the beginning and end of the one-session class.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Colonization or slavery may be referenced regarding the multicultural origin of Carnival. This class will maintain a historical, secular viewpoint.
