Celebrate Black History for Young Children
Class experience
In this course, we'll celebrate the current and past accomplishments of notable black children, men and women. We will use creative activities like a scavenger hunt, a science experiment, and a musical jam session to highlight those who have excelled in Science Technology Engineering Arts Math and Sports. We will also read books and poems to help foster appreciation and pride in ourselves. This will be a great time for students to learn more about a group of people who have contributed much...
Learners will get exposure to the accomplishments of people from the African Diaspora.
In college I took African American studies classes. As a black American, I am embedded in the culture, but those classes helped me look even further into the figures who helped shape our our world. This exposure made me want to spark the same awareness and appreciation in our youngest learners through this class.
1 file available upon enrollmentFor week 1, parents will need to print out the provided pdf for the scavenger hunt. Pictures should be cut out, and placed around the room so that learners can find them during class. For week 2 we will make make moon dough. This can get messy, so make sure students do this in an area that you don't mind getting a little messy. You may want provide a large tray or container to catch any spills as well. Moon Dough original recipe (Allergen Alert): 8 cups of flour 1 cup of baby oil or vegetable oil Food coloring (optional) Gluten Free Alternatives: 8 cups of Rice flour 1 cup of vegetable oil Food coloring (optional) OR 3/4 cup baking powder or soda 3/4 cup gluten free corn starch 1 cup oil- added 1/4 cup at a time to get to your preferred texture Food coloring (Optional) You can also provide sand tools like cups, molds, and scoops to play with the dough. Alternatively, students don’t have to make dough in class, They can use any kind of sand or dough that they already have on hand for a fun sensory experience as a group. For week 3, learners can bring instruments to play during our jam session. Instruments are not a requirement though as we can still make music by clapping, stomping, snapping etc. Some learners might not even want to play music, but only to dance and that's fine too! Learners are also invited to dress up as someone for this class. It isn’t a requirement, but it will be fun. Learners will also be asked to share information about at least 1 notable black figure in classes 2 and 3. Of course they will not be forced to share, but will be gently encouraged to do so.
Of course marginalized people often have to endure some type of adversity to move ahead in their field of choice. So children may know stories on their own that involve these challenges and they may share them. If that happens, we will acknowledge that part of the story then move on to continue to celebrate the victories. The original moon dough recipe contains allergens for learners with gluten sensitivities. I have provided options for those with allergies.
Some brief videos may be used in class when time permits to help reinforce ideas or introduce learners to the people we discuss.
