In this class, students will receive remedial instruction on fundamental reading skills through the use of phonics and sight words. Over a period of 10 weeks, the teacher will implement several components of learning through phonics. WEEK 1: The teacher will show a phonics-based video and then model the consonant and vowel sounds of the Alphabet, followed by the repetition of the learners. (subsequent sessions will begin with this or a similar video). The teacher will then provide activities to practice reading consonant-vowel-consonant words with Short A & E vowels. A list of 20 or more sight words will also be reviewed. WEEK 2: Students will review consonant and vowel sounds and continue merging consonant and vowel pairs to form syllables and short words. They will practice syllables with consonants and the vowels, I & O. A list of 20 or more sight words will also be reviewed. WEEK 3: Students will review syllables and words learned, and increase their syllable word bank by adding the vowel, U along with sight words. A list of 20 or more sight words will also be reviewed. WEEK: 4: Students will decode multi-syllable words by using their knowledge of syllable pairs and counting syllables for accurate pronunciation. This procedure will include picture and word match-ups. A list of 20 or more sight words will also be reviewed. WEEK 5: Students will review the previous concepts, listen to and learn other phonics-based songs, receive a list of sight words to memorize, and read short sentences. A list of 20 or more sight words will also be reviewed. WEEK 6: This week will focus on the consonant blends, bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl, br, cr, sn, st, sp, sw, and wh. Students will be given words to coincide with these blends. A list of 20 or more sight words will also be reviewed. WEEKS 7: This week will focus on the consonant blends, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr, sc, sk, sm, str, squ, spr, thr, and tw. Students will be given words to coincide with these blends. A list of 20 or more sight words will also be reviewed. WEEK 8: This week will focus on the consonant blends, wr, scr, spl, th, sh, ch, ph, kn, dge, and tch. Students will be given words to coincide with these blends. A list of 20 or more sight words will also be reviewed. WEEK 9: The teacher will reinforce all concepts learned throughout the previous lessons. At this stage, students will be assigned short passages to read with accuracy and fluency. The passages will include words and blends learned in the previous weeks. WEEK 10: During this week, students will take turns reading a sentence from an assigned passage using word blends learned from the previous weeks.

Students will increase their reading skills through phonetic repetition and reinforcement as well as with the support of sight words.

I am offering this class because many young students still struggle with reading. Phonics helps to bridge the gap of fundamental skills that may have been missed or need to be strengthened. My background includes teaching Pre-K through 10th grade, during which time, many students were below grade level in reading. I have a track record of moving struggling readers to proficient readers. I greatly look forward to offering my skills as a teacher on the Outschool platform.
