Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Once again, Detective Higdon is asking for help to "Crack This Case"! The National Anywhereville Museum has been robbed of millions of dollars of historic jewelry and authorities are confused by all of the conflicting eyewitness reports.... We have plenty of eyewitnesses who saw the thief who carried out this crime, but we have to sort through all of their statements to piece together the thief's appearance!

In this one time class, students will help "Detective Higdon" investigate by interacting with a virtual presentation containing eyewitness accounts of what happened when the thief robbed the museum. We will listen to/read the eyewitness accounts and work together as a team to closely examine and infer from the information in each account. As we are listening/reading, we will gather evidence about what the suspect looks like from details in the text. Students will create mental images and then draw a composite sketch based on those images. Students will discuss what the statements from each eyewitness caused them to "see", then add to their sketches as new information about the thief's appearance is deduced.

Once our suspect drawings are finished, students will then review "top secret" police files that show possible suspects who were in the area the day in question. We will compare the students' suspect drawings with the pictures found in the police files in order to prove which suspect robbed the museum!

An arrest will be made, and we will return the jewelry back to the museum where it belongs!

Learning Goals

Students will visualize and make mental images of a suspect based on details/text evidence from Eyewitness Statements. Students will draw a sketch of what the criminal looks like based on those mental images. Students will compare their sketches to several suspects in order to deduce the identity of the thief. Students will practice inferencing, deductive reasoning, and using text evidence to support ideas and opinions. Team work skills will be strengthened through this activity.
