Catapult (STEM Challenge): Are Your Ready for a STEM Challenge Using Catapults?
Class experience
In this course students will learn the History, Math, Engineering, and Science behind catapults. They will then create their own mini version of a catapult that they will use to catapult other mini objects across the room. (Objects can include foil balls, mini marshmallows, Mini Pumpkins, and cotton balls.) Students will be encouraged to think out of the box and create their own design. Students will be shown two separate catapult designs that they may choose to make if they can not think of...
Students will increase their understanding of catapults. Students will improve their listening skills by listening to directions to create a catapult.
My Name is Mrs. Bannert. I am a certified teacher. I have a Masters in Education. For the past five years I have taught in a public school setting and for the past three years I have taught in an online format. I am certified to teach Math, History, Science and English. Catapults fascinate me. My husband and I have made a few mini life size models of our own with our children. This course allows me to share the knowledge I have obtained with learners around the world.
To Test the Design: A sheet of tin foil to make mini cannon balls Measuring tape to determine how far their objects traveled. A Bowl paper or plastic cups to make a tower (3 for large solo cups, 7 for small cups) Students may design their own catapult or create one of the three I will show them. (Note these items are not all required. The only required items are the ones your student needs to design their catapult.) The Catapults I will show include: Popsicle sticks Rubber bands (20 Max in case a few break) Plastic Disposable Spoon Bottle Cap Binder Clip Hot glue gun (This will be to glue bottle cap lid on catapult) - students may have an adult do this part or choose to build the catapult that requires no glue. Student are encouraged to create and design their own mini catapult. They can use any household items such as coke cans, spoons, rubber bands, Popsicle sticks, masking tape, hot glue, magazines, newspaper, soup cans, and bottle caps. In a previous class I did have a student who wanted to launch a carcass from his catapult. If you would like to do this you may create your carcass from play-doh and let it dry prior to class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
In creating a catapult students will use a hot glue gun (This will be to glue bottle cap lid on catapult) - students may have an adult do this part or choose to build the catapult that requires no glue.
