This hour-long introduction to cat science touches on taxonomy, anatomy, physiology, and medicine - which means we don't have time to explore any one thing in too much detail. This class is designed to leave the learner wanting more! This class is about half-and-half lecture and discussion, with my notes, diagrams, and teaching materials made available to the learner. We'll introduce a topic, lecture for several minutes, then discuss and question why we care--and then move on to another field. This class functions both as a survey of biology and as enrichment for learners who aspire to work in cat medicine.
Learning Goals
Students will survey scientific fields related to cats and learn specific information that will improve their understanding of biology, anatomy, and medicine. My goal is to whet the learner's appetite for cat knowledge, so students will learn how and where to continue their cat studies. Students will be given a high-level overview of potential careers relating to cat science and medicine.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
We introduce potentially controversial issues in the field of cat science, including:
*dietary choices for cats, including meat production
*feline ecology, and whether cats should be kept indoors or allowed outdoors
*keeping exotic species as pets, including hybrids
*breeding versus adoption
*spaying and neutering
These issues are presented with respect to nuance and extenuating circumstances, but with a foundation in science. I consult with reliable sources and several DVMs to ensure accuracy.
Supply List
A multi-page packet of information and resources will be provided to students. Several books and websites will be discussed as sources for further information.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
