Cat Asanas: Slow Flow Yoga for Everybody

In this One-Time class, children will get a taste of my yoga style, a combination of asana (physical postures and movements) and mindfulness, all channeling cats! This class includes cat images all the way through.

Class Experience

Children will learn a short asana flow (physical practice) with engaging, accessible movement and a short Savasana meditation at the end. Most of the asanas are related to cats, and the children will get to channel the personality and quirks of a cat in every shape. This class includes cat images all the way through. This means children see me in a small window and see a slide with a cute cat showing a rough sketch of the shape that we are in at that moment. This helps children who learn best with active, changing, colourful visuals to help their imagination. If they find this distracting and would rather see just me, that is an option too.

My teaching style is inquiry-based and learner-centred. I am dedicated to accessibility and inclusivity. Thus every shape is optional and can be modified for all abilities. The class begins and ends with a verbal check-in, and my language is invitational. In the middle, learners will be on mute but are welcome and encouraged to come off mute and ask questions any time.

No prior yoga or meditation experience is required. Stretchy and/or loose clothing is a must. It is best of children can come with a mat, but this is not necessary. Carpet, a towel, or grass is good as well. A strap or blanket and a pillow or block is helpful but not required.

This class is small to make sure I am able to check in individually with everyone, observing and responding to their practice. While this is a One-Time class, children who would like more may enrol in my Ongoing class following this one.

I noticed recently there are a lot of searches on Outschool for “mindfullness.” (Note spelling.) I am adding this word into my description to make sure the class appears for “mindfullness” as well as “mindfulness.”

Learning Goals

Students will learn a yoga sequence involving asana (physical body shapes) and meditation. This is not merely an exercise class. All asanas can be adapted for all bodies and abilities.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This is not an exercise class. However children will be gently moving their bodies, so an open space in which to stretch their arms and legs and to lie down is needed. Falling over in a light balance shape like Tree is possible. Adult supervision, appropriate clothing (loose or stretchy), and a soft surface (yoga mat, grass, or carpet) is necessary to avoid injury. Please advise me before class if your child has any physical disabilities that may impact their ability to do stretches and balance shapes. I am happy to accomodate for all bodies. Footwear: The safest and easiest way to practice yoga is barefoot. Children may wear sneakers/running shoes if more comfortable that way. Socks are fine during the sitting and lying down portions of the class but can cause slipping if worn without shoes during the standing and stretching portions of the class.
