This class is designed to have students drawing constantly, using just a pen or pencil and paper. The instructor will make quick and simple art on the whiteboard, and the learners will follow along. Throughout the class, the artists are encouraged to use their creativity to express their individual style. Because the artwork is simple and fast, no experience is required. We will periodically take a break from drawing to share our artwork with each other, so that the instructor may make comments and recommendations.
Learning Goals
In this 90-minute class, students will learn about all of the common symbols used for cartoon effects: the 'language' of cartooning. They will learn to use basic and easy-to-draw shapes to help their characters express emotions like love, shock, confusion, anger, and craziness. Also included are 'special effects' like speech bubbles, thought clouds, fight clouds, electrical zaps, fire and water effects, and lots more! Students will learn these quick symbols, then make their artwork featuring their own exciting characters.

Chuck Butler has been drawing his whole life. He has taught drawing and cartooning for pre-schoolers, elementary students, and high-schoolers. He has illustrated several children's books using both digital and hand-drawn artwork, as well as comic strips and advertisements.
