Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
We will focus on careers, specifically what a person in a particular job does, what the work conditions are like, and what is required to do that job. While I will present information in the beginning of each course, the class will be interactive. Students will read aloud, ask and answer questions, roleplay, and play games to learn about careers while being social and practicing their conversation skills. Our work will naturally lead to new vocabulary and discussion about concepts like growth and fixed mindset, skills, and pay/benefits. All of these will be addressed in a way that is age-appropriate and appropriately challenging. Our focus will be international. Can a project manager work in The US? South Africa? Japan? Can a professor work in Canada, Mexico, and Germany during their career? We'll find out!

Week One: Project Manager: Let's Build a Team
Week Two: Pastry Chef: It's choux, not shoe
Week Three: Data Scientist: How Big is Big Data?
Week Four: Copy Writer: Let's Write an Ad
Week Five: Large Animal Vet: Horses, Elephants, and Camels, Oh My
Week Six: Nurse: ER, OR, and ICU
Week Seven: Occupational Therapist: Not Exactly What It Sounds Like
Week Eight: Translator: Words, Palabras, Mots, 말, Kelimeler
Week Nine: Pharmacist
Week Ten: UX designer
Week Eleven: Dental Hygienist
Week Twelve: Actuary
Week Thirteen: Tour guide
Week Fourteen: Digital Marketer
Week Fifteen: Entrepreneur

Learning Goals

Students will learn about the skills, education, and ability needed to have a specific career. We will also address a day in the life of a person in the week's job and how in-demand the role will be when the students are older. We'll examine what the career looks like in two or three countries and whether a person in this career must work for a company or is able to be an entrepreneur or freelancer. Students will understand the career, their interest in the type of work, and they will have new vocabulary specific to a position or industry.
