In this class we will be creating a marble track with all kinds of obstacles for your marbles to cross on its way to the finish line. We will be using and recycling all kinds of household materials such as cardboard, cereal boxes, paper, tape, glue, paper plates, bottles, caps, etc. to build our projects. Save up whatever materials you have, I would love to see what you can find! We will also need a marble or two, of course. This class could get a little messy as we create, may require...
Students will practice designing and building a structure to support a marble track. Students will practice trial and error style construction and find a style that works well for them.
The homework will be to continue building outside class. The amount of time can vary, depending on the difficulty of your ideas, and the available time in your schedule.
I will post handouts in the classroom discussion - you may wish to print these. Essential materials will include: -Marble (1+) -Pencils and paper -Scissors (or an exacto knife -for supervised older learners) -Something sticky (glue, hot glue, tape, painters tape, etc.) -An assortment of recycled materials such as cardboard, thinner cereal style boxes paper, caps or lids, toilet paper or paper towel tubes, etc. -A ruler might be handy Other material ideas could include: pvc tubes, wire, tables, walls or surfaces to attach pieces to, the sky is the limit. We will brainstorm to help support students thinking about what they each have and can think of to use in class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
2 hours 45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Students will need to cut pieces of cardboard, paper, etc. for their projects. They may need assistance from an adult for some of their cuts We will discuss and demonstrate safety in class, but I recommend a parent is nearby during class.
Students may want to do additional research after the first class, i.e. watching video examples of marble runs, looking at architecture examples to trouble shoot an unstable structure, etc.
