Candy Math Mashup: Delicious Ways To Do Math
Class experience
US Grade 1 - 2
In this course, students will be manipulating candy to do math. Students will compare numbers, add and subtract, multiply and divide, analyze graphs and tables, learn about different shapes and their attributes, and partition shapes into halves, thirds, and fourths. This ongoing course would work perfectly with 2nd graders, advanced 1st graders, and/or 3rd graders who need extra practice. Each week will be focused on specific standards in math. Week of 9/6- Measurement and Data with...
Students will make a picture graph and a bar graph to represent a data set. Students will solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph. Students will compare numbers using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons. Students will add and subtract using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. Students will skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s. Students will use addition and subtraction to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions. Students will recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Students will partition rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths.
