Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 2
Valentine's day is upon us and what better way to celebrate than enjoying some candy heart math!

This class will meet 3 times in the course of a week to work on a few different math concepts.

Day 1: Candy heart sorting and patterning

Students will sort their pile of candy hearts into piles by color. We will then count them and build patterns with them. We will cover AB, AABB, and ABC patterns. If time remains, we will look at other types of patterns such as ABBA.

Day 2: Building bar graphs

We will start by looking at a few examples of bar graphs and discussing what information we can get from bar graphs. Then we will use our pile of candy hearts to build our bar graph and color it. We will then use our bar graphs to analyze our data and answer questions about it.

Day 3: Building line plots

Again, we will start by looking at line plots and comparing them to bar graphs. We will then make our own line plot with our candy hearts followed by analyzing the data and answering questions about it.

Students are welcome to use their own candy hearts, however, if your student doesn't have any on hand they can make their graphs using the candy hearts I have on screen.

Please note that there will be documents that your student will need for this class - they will be available to you upon enrollment.

Learning Goals

Students will utilize their skills for following directions. They will use communication skills as we share and discuss the different graphs. They will use and practice math concepts of sorting, patterning, and graphing.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Lauren and I am excited to be teaching here on Outschool! I am looking forward to teaching early childhood development classes - preschool math, literacy, social skills and more! I have worked with children/students of all ages. My primary focus is with young children as I have a bachelors degree in elementary education (prek - 4th) which I obtained through Grand Canyon University. I have spent the last 10 years working in an early childhood development center, primarily working with children ages 2-4. During these last 10 years I have developed and implemented curriculum across many content areas. Aside from teaching, I am a color guard instructor at both the middle and high school levels.

I think learning is all about having fun, especially with the younger children! My experience of running an early childhood classroom will aide me in providing fun and engaging lessons here on Outschool as well!

When I am not coaching or teaching, I am busy being a wife and a mom! My husband and I have a seven year old son who is currently in second grade and an infant daughter. My older son is very involved in sports, which means I am too! I also enjoy reading, journaling, and watching tv.

I look forward to meeting and working with many young children on this journey!
