O'Canada! This 8 week course will explore Canadian Social Studies, focusing on People and Environments, the Political and Physical Regions of Canada (based on the Ontario and Alberta Social Studies Curricula, grades 4-6). This course does not explore Canadian History, Heritage or Identity. This course uses a combination of discussion, lecture, activities, short videos and research. Students will be asked to share their thoughts and opinions and will be encouraged to participate as much as they are comfortable. I have a friendly and relaxed teaching style and will work to encourage collaboration and conversation amongst learners. Schedule: Week 1: Canadaโs provinces and territories and their capital cities Weeks 2 and 3: Canadaโs physical regions, economic sectors and cardinal directions Week 4: Industrial development and the natural environment Week 5: Balancing human needs and environmental stewardship Week 6: Roles and responsibilities of citizens and of different levels of government in Canada Week 7: Investigating social and/or environmental issues Week 8: Canadaโs involvement around the world (climate crisis and space exploration) Our weekly topics are subject to change depending on the needs of the class and the timing of lessons. Some prior knowledge required. Learners should be comfortable reading and writing independently. We will create a supportive and respectful learning environment where learners feel safe and comfortable. Learners are welcome to banter and ask questions to challenge our thinking, but respectfulness and taking turns while speaking is required. Disrespectful language and hateful, racist, or homophobic chats, posts, etc., will not be tolerated and will be grounds for removal from the class. Should disagreements arise, we will practice being respectful even if you disagree. Parents may email me prior to enrollment with any questions about the course!
Learning Goals
Learners will be able to identify Canada's regions, the roles and responsibilities of citizens and of different levels of government in Canada, and describe Canada's involvement around the world.
