Class Experience

NOTE: This is the same course as Canadian Law for Teens: Part 1, but has been designed to accommodate students age 12-14 who are interested in taking the course. This separate listing was created in order to follow Outschool's age guidelines.

This introductory course will explore how a law is made, an overview of criminal law, courts and trials while finishing with an introduction to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This course explores a variety of topics and issues within Canadian law in order to expose students to the breadth of the Canadian legal system. Using real, Canadian cases as a point of discussion and engagement, this course will function as lecture-based with an ongoing opportunity throughout each class for students to engage with myself and each other.

Class 1: The Making of Laws
What is a law? Why do we need them? How does a bill become law? The class will explore and discuss the reason behind Canada's laws while learning how Canada goes from political idea, to proposed bill, to formal law.

Class 2: Criminal Law
What is a crime? How is someone charged with a criminal offence? This class will explore the always engaging topic of criminal law by exploring concepts such as mens rea (guilty mind) and actus reus (guilty act).

Class 3: Courts and Trials
What levels of court exist in Canada? Who is present in the courtroom? Does Canada have its own version of "Judge Judy"? Do all cases even make it into court? This class explores what happens during a trial and other tribulations of the court process.

Class 4: Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
How does Canadian law ultimately protect our rights? Which rights are protected? Are there any exceptions to these rights? This final Part 1 class will provide a brief overview of Canadian constitutional law by exploring the often treasured Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Once students take this Part 1 Course, they may be interested in enrolling in a Part 2 course and beyond to engage with the following topics: Torts/Contracts, Prisons, Sentencing, Rehabilitation and more.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their understanding of Canadian law to be more informed both as citizens as well as for those interested in potential future careers as lawyers, probation officers, police officers or criminologists.
