US Grade 8 - 11
** This section of the course is being offered specifically to address the current crises in both Gaza and Ukraine and to consider the legalities of the situation and the realities of war in the 21st century. Through an exciting forum of learning about real-world conflicts of today, this course will engage students through case studies of conflicts and the existing legal framework. By week three, the students will be asked to answer this question for themselves through critically analyzing the legal framework and then placing real-world scenarios in them: Is it possible to wage a legal war under international law? Issues addressed will include examples such as the use of child soldiers, the bombing of medical facilities and the displacement of civilian populations. Each week the students will learn a different aspect of international laws of war, learn about the courts which are designed to hold individuals and governments accountable and study a particular case which highlights the focus that week. The learners will be asked to complete an independent study through the course and will present their findings Upon completion. Grades are not automatically given out, but should a parent wish to have an assessment, the teacher will be happy to provide the assessment based on the student's final project and their overall understanding of the material.
