Class experience

US Grade 6 - 8
5 lessons//1 Week
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Writing Trick #1: Asking Questions
Students will: Ask questions to get at story idea and main character. They might get the time to start writing their story in class.
Lesson 2
Writing Trick #2: Mind Mapping
Students will: Learn how to mind map their opening scene with setting and character details. This takes the entire class period, so we probably will not get much writing time in (but we will in subsequent lessons).
Lesson 3
Writing Trick #3: Drawing to Write
Students will: Sketch the landscape of their story and label the parts to help them get at more details and events that will happen in their story. We will be writing after the demonstration and questions.
Lesson 4
Writing Trick #4: Timeline
Students will: Create a timeline of events for their story, some of which is already created in previous lessons, but this shows them the direction their story can take. We will have time for some writing.
Lesson 5
Writing Trick #5: Writing Sprints
Students will: Learn to set a goal for writing a short part of their story for ten minutes, regroup, discuss and then write for another ten minute sprint.
Students will learn how to use 5 writing strategies to break through writer’s block and use each strategy to write a short story.
