Informal assessment will take place throughout the camp by asking students, through chat box polls, to share the ways in which they can apply the strategies learned from psychology research to their lives.Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 6
This camp is ideal for learners who have an interest in human behavior and learning about various types of psychology. The material is most appropriate for advanced and/or curious learners. There will be a thread of application throughout the course, guiding learners as to how they can use psychology in their own lives. We'll use polls to encourage learner participation. No prior experience is needed. While participation is welcomed, research informs us that learners understand, retain and recall information better when they are relaxed. With this in mind, I never call on students to participate. Opportunities are provided, but students can relax knowing they won't be called on or put on the spot. The course content will be as follows: Class 1: We'll look at research methods used in field of psychology and how they compare to the "hard" sciences. We'll also discuss the beginnings of psychology and why it's difficult to neatly define psychology. We’ll also touch on the psychology of learning and memory since these were the first studies done in psychology. Class 2: We'll discuss social psychology, and the impact groups and diversity have on our behavior. Included will be discussion of one of the most controversial social psychology experiments, which was done to understand the influence of authority. Class 3: This class will include the psychology of personality formation and motivation theories. We'll start with early personality theories like Hippocrates and the four humors, and motivation theories like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Class 4: We'll cover personality disorders and abnormal psychology. Students will likely come home from this class trying to diagnose everyone they know. :) I use slides, gifs and chat box polls to enhance learning and encourage participation. I have a structured, yet humor-filled teaching style, designed to keep student's interest, allow for discussion, and help learner's feel comfortable.

This is a fact-based course. I don't anticipate topics to be emotionally difficult for the average student. I don't believe parental guidance is required. I do however put trigger warnings at the top of every class outline to alert sensitive students.
