In this "camp" style multi-day class, students will meet for a total of four class periods (25 minutes each) to discuss the first book in the Shadow and Bone trilogy by Leigh Bardugo. Please note that this is the same content as the 4 week book club, I have just added a "camp" schedule as an extra option. In this class students will Improve their group discussions skills. Practice analyzing characters through critical thinking and questioning. Identify moral and philosophical dilemmas and work through multiple angles of choices and consequences. Compare and contrast the book and film versions while critiquing stylistic choices by the author and producers. Explain the pros and cons of first-person point of view and discuss how the story might change if the author had used another point of view.
There is no homework for this class; however, students may wish to read more of the book(s) or watch more episodes of the Netflix series if they have not yet done so. The Netflix series is not necessary to watch for this class, it simply adds another layer to the discussion. Students will also have the option to present a creative project during the final class meeting in order to obtain a coupon for their next class with me. This project is not mandatory.
Students do not need anything for this class; however, they may wish to bring copies of the book if they have them. Students may also bring any other Grishaverse fan items if they wish.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour 40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
This class is listed for ages 14-18 because the Netflix series is rated TV-14. The Netflix series is not mandatory for this class and since the show follows the book pretty closely, students can easily participate if they have only read the book or only seen the show. This story contains elements of magic, violence, and some sexual content.
