Camp Cronkite: Journalism Boot Camp

Class
Kayla D. Fleming
Average rating:4.9Number of reviews:(126)
A one-week camp for budding journalists to learn the basics of the trade and hone their skills in government reporting, sports journalism, profiles, and more!

Class experience

I have a passion for journalism and have worked as a journalist for the past five years at a local newspaper. In that time, I have covered a multitude of subjects, including sports and local/state government. I have been at the forefront of media coverage in my area for major sports moments, community events, and government decisions, including recent decisions and emergency meetings related to the pandemic. As I am still a working journalist, I believe I can offer your learners a modern, up to date look at the ever changing field.
Students will read and discuss articles as provided by the teacher. If students have an issue in viewing an article, a summary will be given to them. Students will also, occasionally, pick the subject of an article they may read the next day in class. These links are not yet provided.
For one assignment, students will be asked to watch a briefing related to COVID-19. They may either watch their states' governor, their President, or any other elected official speaking on the crisis. Students will also be asked to read an NPR article concerning the future of the 2020 MLB season as it relates to COVID-19. I understand that some parents may not wish for their students to be exposed to this. If so, please contact me and we can work something else out for them to view or read. However, this topic will come up some as it is an incredibly newsworthy event.
