Class Experience

Anyone who has read Calvin and Hobbes strips knows that they can be both thought provoking and funny. Readers are invited to look at the world in new ways, reflect on their own faults and accomplishments, and gain an understanding of the importance of family and community. Calvin & Hobbes cartoons offer us so much to think and talk about. That is just what we will do in this one time, 45 minute long class.

Learners are invited to bring their Calvin & Hobbes books and comic strips to class. They will have an opportunity to present and discuss strips that they like. Both funny strips and thought provoking strips are welcome for presentation. All strips presented will be discussed. The depth of that discussion will depend on the learners. To aide the discussion, I will be prepared to ask questions of the learners including but not limited to:
-Why did you choose that strip?
-What does that make you think about in your own life?
-What do you think the author of the strip was trying to say?
- Do you agree with the message in that strip?
-Why is that strip funny?
-Why isn't that strip funny?

Through this discussion, learners are not just talking about a comic strip. They are getting valuable practice discussing important themes. learning to express their thoughts and feelings, and gaining experience in the art of evaluating literature.

Please note, because this class depends heavily on discussion, I will reschedule any sections that have less than three learners. I will reschedule for the same day of the week and time whenever possible. I will do this at least once to allow time for more learners to enroll. Please note that if a reschedule is necessary and the new date and time do not fit your schedule, you will receive a refund.

***IMPORTANT *****
Learners should come to class ready to participate in class discussion. This means that they should understand how to mute and unmute in a zoom classroom. They should also know how to pin a video feed in the zoom classroom.

This class will be heavily dependent on learner interaction and discussion. It will not run with less than 3 learners. When the class does not have the requisite 3 learners, I will attempt to re-schedule it before canceling.

I hope to foster an atmosphere that encourages lively, respectful discussion so that each student feels heard and each has an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the material.
