Class Experience

Learners will be introduced to basic hula steps.
Learners will use these basic hula steps to learn a hula kahiko (ancient style.)
Using basic Hawaiian language vocabulary and phrases, participants will learn about Hawaiian history and culture.
Ms. Iris has taught hula for over 10 years.
She has over 20 years of hula experience, having danced in numerous community and private events. For several years, she has competed in hula competitions as a dancer, chanter, and hoʻopaʻa (drummer and chanter.) Her Hawaiian name is Noheamaikalani, given to her by her Kumu Hula. She is known as Auntie Nohea at the hula hālau (hula school) that she is a part of, where she currently holds an alaka’i (leader) position and teaches students ages 4-84.

She was a credentialed Multiple Subject Teacher, with nearly 15 years of classroom experience, (in both a private school and public school setting,) before making the transition to homeschooling her own children full-time. She has been a classroom teacher for grades Kindergarten, second, third, fifth, and some high school. She has also taught physical education. In addition to teaching hula, she is currently an online English teacher to learners all over the world.
The instructor will provide optional extension activities.
 3 files available upon enrollment
Please attend class wearing comfortable clothing that allows for ample movement and stretching. Stretchy pants, leggings, and a comfortable top will be just fine. Learners may wear a sarong/pareo or hula pāʻū (skirt) if he/she already owns one. Also optional is a flower worn in the hair. Students will be dancing barefoot. During class times, students must be in a place that allows them to have about a 6-8 foot diameter of safe dancing space. Students can have a writing instrument ready, along with the Hula Kahiko Book. (Included in the downloadable packet provided by the instructor.) It is also a good idea to have a water bottle and towel on hand.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be assessed with formative (informal) assessments; which will include observations, oral question and response, choral response, and hand signals.
5 hours per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Dance requires physical participation, therefore, please make sure your child has a clear, open dancing space, slip-proof socks or bare feet, a water bottle nearby, and activewear type clothing. Since I am not physically present in the room with the dancers, injuries from moving around are possible if not properly supervised by an adult.

Parents, please review Classroom Expectations and Outschool Quick Start Guide with your learner(s). These will be provided once you enroll your learner(s).
