Class Experience
This is a FLEX CLASS. This class runs for 8 weeks. There will NOT be any live classes. This class is great for all learners interested in Native American culture. This 8-week class is a great addition for students studying California history. No previous background knowledge is required. We will be learning specifically about the Chumash Native American tribe of California. This course will help students discover the Chumash location in California, culture, daily life, legends, and their first contact with Europeans. I will post one pre-recorded lesson (20-30 minute power point presentation) every Monday along with an optional homework assignment. Class discussion boards will be posted throughout the week in the Outschool Classroom Tab. We will interact online through our message board. Periodically, I will assign small writing or drawing projects that learners will be encouraged to share with the class. We will also watch videos and read articles pertaining to topics we will be covering throughout the course. Learners are asked to consistently log into the Outschool classroom for updated posts and assignments. Week 1- Location and Physical Geography Week 2- Legends and Folklore Week 3- Chumash Diet Week 4- Trade and Economy/ Government Week 5- Traditions/ Music/ Art Week 6- Tools Week 7- Clothing Week 8- European Exploration and Conclusion Participation is highly encouraged to review and master information presented in the weekly lessons. This flexible schedule is perfect for students who like to review material in their own time. No grades will be given in this class.
Learning Goals
The goal of this class is to study the Chumash Native American culture as a unifying theme of respect for
the earth and harmony with the environment. Through discussion, observation, and
participation, students will gain awareness and appreciation for Native American life.
Students will understand the importance of understanding other cultures and peoples.
-Students will have the opportunity to contribute in class discussions.
-Students will understand the relationship of the Indians with the Earth through Chumash cultural beliefs and legends.
-Students will learn about the daily life of the Native Americans
-Students will identify natural materials used for shelter, weapons,
tools, food, medicine, and clothing.

We will use Youtube video clips as part of this class. Feel free to view videos beforehand, all videos are appropriate for this class.

Paper, Pencil, Crayons A data chart PDF will be attached for download upon enrollment for note taking. Note taking is encouraged, but not required.
