US Grade 8 - 9
Intermediate Level
Using the Princeton Review 8/9 PSAT exam preparation workbook (2nd Edition) and lessons prepared by the teacher (screen shared Word documents), students will study the mechanics of English (grammar, spelling, and punctuation), vocabulary, and reading comprehension to help them prepare for the California state exam. Learners will also be taught test taking strategies to improve their efficiency and speed and ensure that they understand questions correctly. Week of June 30 - July 6: Commas, Semicolons, Colons This class will focus on the correct use of commas (between independent clauses, after dependent/subordinate clauses, around nonrestrictive clauses, in lists, etc.). Students will also learn when and how to use semicolons and colons. Week of July 7-13: Grammar, Vocabulary, and Spelling Through fill-in-the-blank and multiple choice activities, learners will practice using correct prepositions, optimal word choice, etc. They'll be taught syllable division and the concept of open and closed syllables to help them know when to double middle consonants and will study prefixes, suffixes, and root words to improve their spelling accuracy. Week of July 14-20: Reading Comprehension and Practice Tests Learners will read a passage either online or in the workbook and answer reading comprehension questions. Reading strategies will be taught to improve fluency and comprehension skills. Week of July 21-27: Practice Tests The PSAT practice test will be administered twice (on two separate days). Based on the learner's scores, we will revisit any concepts that need more further review and practice. Each class will begin with a lesson by the teacher. Then, students will be provided with guided practice exercises to help them apply the lesson. As this class is limited to three students (siblings), there will be plenty of opportunity for class participation, and students will be called on frequently so that the teacher can ensure that they're understanding the lessons being taught and are mastering the skills.
Learning Goals
Learners will master the ELA skills to succeed when they take their California state exams in August.
