Everyone knows that soul food is cuisine made from the heart. This scrumptious food originated from the South, but now I put my own Southern California spin on the foods I know and love! My grandparents were originally from Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas. So Southern cooking is in my veins! But I live in Southern California, a peculiar place known for kale everything, perpetually warm weather, and citrus trees. So I've put my own new spin on these time tested recipes, from my soul to yours! In this one-time class I will walk you through step by step to prepare a delicious dish of my Louisiana Crab Cakes with yummy homemade Dipping Sauce. Learners will have a chance to ask questions, get personal tips, and share a look at their final creations with each other! The vibe is chill, and the atmosphere is kept supportive: we're all here to develop and grow our love of cooking and respect for fresh and healthy ingredients. Explore a modern and fresh twist on classic soul food, California style!
Learning Goals
Learners will improve their soul food cooking skills including healthy eating, measuring, prep, improving their palate, and timing!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there, my name is Ms. Toya! I live in Los Angeles, California with my three girls ages 16, 13, and 11. I love kids and always have the best time making them laugh with funny stories and games. I have a creative energy and a positive mindset! I enjoy cooking for families and friends, and have earned my California Food Handlers License.
I learned to cook from my beautiful, Southern grandmothers. Flossie (my mother's mom) was born in Louisiana. From her I picked up Cajun and Creole cuisine and seasonings. Dorothy (my father's mom) was from Arkansas, and from her I picked up using fresh vegetables, herbs, and farm to table eating. They both taught me the joy of cooking delicious meals and making things from scratch. They passed on to me a heritage that I treasure!
I’m excited to offer my cooking courses as an Outschool teacher! I love to take traditional southern dishes and put my own fresh, California spin on them! All classes are designed to encourage interaction at your child's comfort level (hey, I was a super shy kid, too). My teaching style embraces empathy, problem solving, and creativity. I truly believe each and every kid has a gift that's just waiting to shine. Making sure that your kiddo feels happy, engaged, and inspired in all my classes is my top priority!
Cooking is a crucial life skill that your child will carry with them throughout their lifetime. It can also become a career that opens up the world to them and offers many exciting opportunities! Let's make sure your child is comfortable, creative, and confident in the kitchen.
I can’t wait to meet you and have you join me in my next class!
