The calendar isn't just for telling us the date, it is an excellent way to learn math skills! In this class, we will practice counting, sequencing, and identifying numbers using a calendar. We will also use number charts, graphs, and interactive games and activities to practice counting by 1's, 5's, and 10's, adding and subtracting within ten, understanding concepts of greater than and less than, and telling time, among others. Each class will begin with using the calendar to name the day of the week, month, and date. Learners will become familiar with using a calendar to identify the day's date. After that, we will use a number chart to practice counting by 1's, 5's, and 10's up to 100! Then, we'll use our counting skills to help us set the clock to different times of day. Next, we will discuss our season and current weather conditions. We will use a graph to record our daily weather, practicing counting, quantifying, and assigning numbers to sets. Here, learners will practice comparing sets by using words such as more, fewer, most, and least. We will finish with a game or activity that promotes number sense and/or math problem solving skills while incorporating other STEAM elements. Activities may include the Missing Number Game where learners use counting skills to identify the missing number in a number line; the Mixed-Up Number Game where learners use sequencing skills to put the numbers back in the correct order; and our Same Game in which learners use early math terminology and concepts to add or take away from a set to make them equal to each other. STEAM activities incorporating math may include coding to move an item through a maze (tech), using a scale to find equal sets (science, engineering), and completing building challenges using shapes or virtual blocks (geometry, engineering). Items such as counting bears, dice, balance scales, and PowerPoint slides will be used for our lessons and games (no materials required for learners). You will also meet some math-loving puppet friends to make learning extra fun! I hope you can join us for Calendar Math Super Stars!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from Fort Hays State University
Hello! My name is Rebecca and I LOVE teaching! I have a B.S. in Education and an M.S. in Reading Education. I love creating and adapting my own curricula to make learning engaging and fun for the virtual learner and believe that providing interactive, organized, and thoughtful instruction in a supportive environment can pave the way for even the most hesitant student. It is my philosophy that learning happens in many ways, so, naturally, teaching should, too! My classes incorporate a variety of teaching tools to provide for different learning styles.
