Calendar Math
In this ongoing class we will work on months of the year and days of the weeks. Students will practice writing the date, solve math facts and word problems. As well as working on place value to help build students number sense.

In this class we will focus on the calendar. Students will participate in various calendar activities such as identifying the days of the week and month of the year through song. Students will answer questions like "What is today? What will tomorrow be? What was yesterday?" Along with this we will have a number of the day where students will identify one more, one less, ten more and ten less than that number. To build number sense we discuss the place value of that number. Every class will have a new math fact and word problem of the class to build students number reasoning skills. We will discuss the different math strategies for solving problems. By the end of class students will have completed a calendar sheet for that day. Week 1: writing the date, days of the week, number of the day, place value, fact family Week 2: writing the date, days of the week, number of the day, place value, fact family Week 3: writing the date, days of the week, number of the day, place value, fact family Week 4: writing the date, days of the week, number of the day, place value, fact family
Learning Goals
Students will be able to identify the day of the week, month and year by participating in calendar activities.
Students will also be able to solve addition and subtractions by practicing using strategies discussed in class.

Hi my name is Mrs. Horval
I am a 1st grade teacher in Northern Virginia.
I am currently in my 6th year of teaching and my 5th year of teaching 1st grade. I have a Bachelors degree in English and Elementary education. I am a certified Pre k to 5th grade teacher.
I am extremely passionate about literacy. Especially foundational skills of reading and writing. I enjoy teaching phonics skills and offer class at various levels. My phonics classes include application of skills taught in lesson in both reading and writing. The goal of all my classes is to make learning fun and engaging for all learners. In my lessons I facilitate hands on practice and application of skills through stories and games.
Some other topics I also teach are: math-specifically in the areas of addition and subtraction to help learners grow into more confident mathematicians. Prep classes for students entering the classroom for the first time- focusing on following directions, raising their hand, holding a pencil, using materials correctly like glue, practice cutting, and any other skills they might need to be prepared for classroom instruction.
I also enjoy baking and plan to offer some classes on baking.
In my classroom we are all learners. And mistakes are always welcomed as they make for a more authentic learning experience. I believe that for students to grow and flourish in their learning they need to make mistakes. I structure my classes so students feel safe to make mistakes and know that they will never be penalized for doing so. I want my learners to know that I am there to support them when they make mistakes.
Some fun facts about myself are that I am a dog lover and have my own fur baby named Athena. I also love all things pineapples. Some hobbies of mine are doing crafts and calligraphy.
