Class Experience
US Grade 10 - 12
The goal of this course is to augment learning for students concurrently enrolled in a high school calculus course (AP, non-AP, honors, etc.), although students not enrolled in a calculus course are also welcome, of course. The topics to be covered will be those that are typically covered in a standard high school calculus class. The structure will be informal and driven mainly by student questions either on specific problems or more general questions about concepts that the student finds challenging. My teaching style is guided by the idea that students learn best what they discover themselves. What this means in practice is that I ask students questions and try to direct them through a process in which they assimilate the material, solve problems and reach conclusions as much as possible on their own. I also like to help students see calculus as one coherent whole way of thinking, with connections between concepts throughout the course, as opposed to a bunch of formulas presented as separate facts simply to be memorized and utilized when needed. The course will be very interactive, with problem-solving on shared whiteboards being the main mode of instruction.
