Class Experience

Did you know that the abacus has been in use since before the adoption of written Hindu-Arabic numerals? Join this class as we learn how to perform calculations using this handy device, which has been in use for thousands of years!

In this class, we will learn how to represent whole numbers (up to the hundred-thousands) and decimals using a soroban or suanpan abacus. We will then learn how to add and subtract numbers on the abacus -- including problems that require regrouping.

Session 1: Parts of a soroban or suanpan and how to represent numbers on your abacus.
Addition with No Regrouping
Session 2: Subtraction with No Regrouping
Session 3: Advanced Addition (with re-grouping)
Session 4: Advanced Subtraction (with re-grouping)

Each week, several videos will be available in the Outschool classroom. Videos will show demonstrations of problems on the physical and virtual suanpan and the physical and virtual soroban. Learners are encouraged to focus on the videos for just the type of abacus that they have, but they are provided with both types of videos in case they wish to learn both. Additionally, there will be a video each week showing how the abacus methods can be translated into the standard algorithm. This helps learners to understand the processes of the standard algorithm.

Learners will participate in the class through dynamic challenges. Each week, learners will challenge each other with a problem that they consider to be very tricky and they will upload a video of themselves showing the solution. Learners will try out each others' problems the creator of the problem will provide feedback to learners who try out their challenges. For the final week, learners will be provided with a set of practice exercises that they can do over and over in order to improve their skills. Learners will then discuss in the classroom which exercises they plan to do and how they plan to master the soroban/suanpan!

Other Details

Supply List
Learners will need an abacus that fits into one of two types:

A Chinese abacus (suanpan) has two beads in the upper deck and five beads in the lower deck.
--> See image here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Suanpan.jpg

A Japanese abacus (soroban) has one bead in the upper deck and four beads in the lower deck.
--> See image here: http://tiny.cc/iydhdz

The method of calculating is similar for both the soroban and the suanpan, so learners can participate in this class using either (or both!) of these two types.

An abacus with a "reset" button is very handy, but not required. Here is a link to one that I have and like: http://tiny.cc/b2dhdz

I will also provide links to virtual abacuses that learners can use if they do not have access to a physical abacus. For those who appreciate a kinesthetic experience, this may not be as fulfilling of an experience. But they are a good option for those who would prefer to learn the concepts without buying a new piece of equipment.

Practice problems will be provided as PDF attachments. Learners will need the ability to print these documents.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching since 2006 and my specialties are Pre-Algebra, Algebra and Geometry. Although I have been focusing on math education for the majority of my time as a teacher, I started my career in the sciences. I have a biology degree from Macalester College and as an undergraduate I did invertebrate zoology research at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC.

I started my teaching career as a middle school (grades 5-8) science teacher. While I was in New York earning my master’s degree in Middle School General Education from the progressive school of education, Bank Street CoIlege, I took a course in inquiry-based pedagogical methods for teaching math. Suddenly, seeing math from this new perspective, I fell in love with mathematics and truly learned to appreciate it myself.

Over the years, I have taught in several schools using methods that move from concrete to abstract. I have sought out positions at schools that encourage and reinforce this kind of pedagogy -- including two adolescent Montessori programs and one school specializing in inquiry education. I have enjoyed using hands-on curriculum with my learners and I am excited to adapt my favorite lessons to the Outschool platform.

Some special pedagogical interests of mine:
Numerical Fluency
Math Manipulatives: Algebra Tiles, Montessori materials, etc
Geometric Construction
Mathematical Exploration, Investigation, and Inquiry
Spatial Reasoning
Logic Puzzles

I only teach subjects that I truly love. That is what I love about teaching on Outschool -- I can truly bring this platform the best of what I have to offer.

It sometimes interests my students to know that I didn't like math as a kid -- I actually got in trouble in 3rd grade for writing "I hate math" all over my math notebook. This is usually a huge surprise to my students, who know me as a total math nerd. I have a Ms. Frizzle style of fashion -- I have math and science prints and designs on my shoes, my dresses, my sweaters, and jewelry. I love solving a problem and helping my students develop that same curiosity and mindset.

A note about scheduling:
I move things around a lot. If you see a class you want to take, register for it as soon as it makes sense for your family to do so. Classes that have nobody in them are always subject to shifts and cancellations. Once at least one person is in a class, I don’t move or cancel it (except in case of illness, emergency, etc of course). ā˜ŗļø
