Class Experience

In this 4-week Flex class, you will learn the basics of baking a cake and decorating it with buttercream frosting. This class is designed for beginning students with basic knowledge of baking and decorating. Each week you will learn a new skill that builds on the last week's project. By the end of the course, you will know how to bake and ice cakes, use a piping bag, and decorate cakes in several styles. This will give you the skills to branch out and create your own designs.

In the pre-recorded video lesson, I will show you the different techniques for the week. Watch it at your convenience. You can pause the video between steps and then watch the next step. Then you can ask questions, post pictures of the different steps of creating your cake, and talk about ideas for other cakes you would like to make. I'll share all my knowledge with you from running a cake decorating home business and making birthday and wedding cakes for a few years. I also taught cake decorating classes at a local craft store for 2 years.

Here's what we'll do each week.
Week 1: Baking the cake, making and coloring buttercream, stacking, and icing the cake.
Week 2: Basics of piping - preparing and filling the piping bag, piping borders, swirls, stars, simple flowers, and writing. Decorate a swirl cake.
Week 3: More advanced piping techniques like roses, grass, leaves, and a general discussion of color theory. Decorate a sunflower cake.
Week 4: Let's take all we've learned and combine it into creating a Unicorn cake! This will include using a little bit of fondant or modeling chocolate for the horn and ears of the unicorn.

A Flex class does not have live classroom sessions but is video-based. You watch the classes whenever it is convenient for you and then participate in the classroom discussion. I'll be available through that discussion to answer questions, give advice, and offer critiques on all your creations. A detailed supply list, recipes, and more will be given to you upon registration.

Learning Goals

Students will learn techniques for baking a moist and delicious cake and icing it with buttercream icing. Students will learn how to make different consistencies of buttercream to use for icing the cake, piping flowers, or other decorating. Students will then learn how to use a piping bag and make several designs. Finally, they will put these skills together to make 2 different cake designs: a sunflower and a Unicorn cake.
