This class will teach students the basics of how to play a Cajon drum. No previous drumming experience is necessary. Students will learn the basic concepts of keeping time and how to keep a beat. They will also learn proper posture and hand drumming techniques. We will work on several cajon patterns including pop/rock, latin, and middle eastern beats. The student will also learn how to play fills (soloing) at the end of 4 bar or 8 bar phrases. Much of the class will be spent with the teacher demonstrating, and then watching and evaluating the student reproduce the pattern, and giving constructive feedback. We may also spend class time playing along with different songs, to get a sense of how a groove is created. It is preferable that students have their own cajon drum for the class, but not essential. They can play on a chair or hand drum if they don't have a cajon. Many of the principles we will learn in this class can also be applied to other hand drums. Note: The "Original Sound for Musicians" setting MUST be enabled on Zoom for this class!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi Outschoolers! I'm a multi-instrumentalist based in Toronto, Canada, specializing in songwriting, drums, percussion, piano, vocals, and music theory. I have been a professional musician for over forty years. I'm a recording artist, producer, film composer, songwriter, and have performed all over the world. I studied music at York University (Toronto, Canada) and Eastman School of Music (Rochester, New York). I currently teach music at middle school in the Toronto District School Board. My music teaching philosophy is simple: I like to find out what skills the student has and what they are missing, and work on filling in those gaps. Also I always ask the student what THEY would like to work on and learn. Most importantly, we will have FUN in the lessons!
