Class Experience

What will be taught?
I am comfortable with any programming language and many tools including Roblox Studio, Unity, Unreal Engine, C++, Python, Sci-Kit, Matlab and more. I can tutor your learner and show them how to use these tools to make interesting things, and perhaps even build a portfolio if they are interested.

What topics will you cover?
I have a masters degree in computer science and have worked on problems in computer graphics, machine learning, mathematics, art, visualization, gaming, business technology, and more.

How will you teach?
I like to be personable and approachable, my style of teaching is to be more like an older brother/mentor and less like a traditional teacher. If your learner is having a hard day, I am happy to be a friend to them. When your learner is ready for a challenge, I have many that I'm excited to give them.

How much will learners get to interact with you and each other?
Since this class is one-on-one, your learner will be interacting with me the entire class, I use the share screen feature a lot, so I recommend having two displays if you got 'em.

Any required experience?
This is really not intended for those just starting to learn programming. It is intended for learners who are looking for a challenge.

Learning Goals

Students will improve by learning the tools they need to build an interesting portfolio of work for college applications, work, or to be a part of a community (for example, if they are interested in helping develop an open-source video game).

Other Details

External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
1) I can teach introductory computer science for K-12 grade. I can also teach or tutor students who are in high school in mathematics: calculus, multi-variate calculus, linear algebra and proof writing.
2) I am named in two patents related to digital signage technology, I have published a couple of papers using computer science and machine learning to solve challenges in environmental science and medicine. I have also had some experience in the video game industry as a developer and tester.
4) I value the following:
    *Low-risk competition
*Social-emotional growth through the development of "soft" skills
    *Student-centered learning
    *Increasing a child's memory capacity
    *Computer and simulation fluency
    *Strategic thinking and problem-solving
I find a lot of joy in working with kids, my philosophy is to let mistakes happen and to be there to help them learn how to recover quickly and confidently. I believe this can be done using video games! I am married, my wife and I live in Oregon, my wife teaches calculus at Oregon State University and here on Outschool!
