Bye-Bye Writers Block! A Creative Writing Workshop.. Without the Pressure!
What's included
1 live meeting
1 in-class hours per weekClass Experience
A unique writing course where we use prompts to get us writing. You never know what the prompt is going to be and it’s geared toward sparking an idea and your creativity doing the rest. The feedback in the group is exclusively positive and how that works is that everyone emphasizes parts of another persons writing that they. As part of the class we also read exerts about famous writers their challenges and experiences and how they overcame them as well as their writing styles and processes. There is no pressure to create a story from start to finish but to put pen to paper and to find an outlet and channel your creativity and thoughts. Not necessarily in a structured way at first. It is designed specifically to open up my students and get them writing through the use of prompts. In this unique class students will receive one word or one line prompts that they would be building their writing pieces around. Once the prompt is received the students will have a set amount of in-class time to write, followed by a sharing session then followed by a guided positive feedback session (I.e. I liked how you described John - I could vividly imagine how he looked like, etc). This class is geared to create an empowering, supportive space and a dedicated time for writing. Each class may have 2-3 prompts Sample Class Overview: - Introductions & Featured Writer - Prompt 1 Writing Session - Students Share & Feedback - Prompt 2 Writing Session - Students Share & Feedback - Quote & Close In this course we adapt the AWA method of creative writing, developed by Pat Schneider and described in her book, Writing Alone and With Others. The method guidelines: 1) Confidentiality: works written and shared in the group - stay there 2) Exercises are suggestions: (hence the “prompts”) - the prompt is not rigid and it only may serve to guide the budding writer/student in the direction of writing, even if unrelated 3) Feedback is always positive: as the work is raw and unedited we focus on discussing what stood out to us rather than critique. This builds confidence in students’ voices and writing. Students are encouraged to mark up their work with feedback if they so wish and build on the takeaways on their own time. No past writing experience is required. ADHD/ADD friendly!
Learning Goals
Students will write with clarity and purpose, producing narrative scenes that include use of imagery, characterization, and elements of plot development. Over the span of the course students will produce a portfolio of original writings and present portions to the class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
In my past work with young students I would run workshops of this nature: creative writing, short story writing, novel writing. As part of my continuing education I regularly take creative writing workshops myself to enhance my own skills as a writer.
As part of my degree I did substantial amounts of writing. I chose philosophy and writing courses as my electives and therefore am highly equipped to pass on my knowledge on the subject matter and run these workshops successfully.
I am passionate about writing and helping students (aka budding young writers) to build confidence and discovering their voice as a writer.
