Class time will start with a greeting from a warm and inviting teacher! Students will be engaged from the beginning by hearing a wonderful and familiar story read aloud: The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle. Students will interact with the read aloud by responding to comprehension and connection questions during and after the story. Then, students will discuss and share their knowledge of the Butterfly Life Cycle. Any misunderstanding will be clarified gently and clearly. The teacher...
Students will learn about or improve their understanding of the Butterfly Life Cycle! They will also have a chance to improve their reading, writing and presentation skills by completing a flip book with the teacher's support and having the opportunity to share it with the class. They will also work on reading comprehension skills and making connections to various texts during read alouds.
I have 11+ years of preschool, kindergarten and early elementary experience. I taught preschool, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten in the public school system for four years. I also spent time teaching and tutoring students from 1st to 3rd grades. I then opened my own learning center/preschool out of my home and have been teaching preschoolers and school aged students for the last seven years! I love teaching early learning concepts and making it fun, enjoyable and developmentally appropriate. I am also a homeschool mom to 3 children: 7, 5 and 3 years old. I have a Master's degree in Teaching and a teaching certificate. I can offer a kind of teaching style that works well with children who have been in a more traditional school settings like Mother's Day Out or public school. But as a homeschool parent, I can also appeal to children who are used to being home for their schooling. I can't wait to meet your child and your family!
Students will be given time to write in their flip books and to color the pages during class. However, depending on the skills and pace of the student, they may have pieces that do not get completed during our class time. They are encouraged to complete their flip book after class. Students can also share their completed flip book with their families and friends!
A 5-page flip book should be printed and cut out. A parent needs to help with stapling the book together. 2 versions of the flip book are available. This allows students to be successful at their own writing level. One version allows students to trace over the letters to write complete sentences, while the second version gives lines for more advanced students to do their own writing. Please look over the 2 options and choose the one that fits your student's writing abilities the best. If you are unsure, please feel free to print both of the options and have them prepared for class. Other supplies needed: Students should have the writing utensil of their choice (ideally it should be erasable: erasable pen or pencil) and whatever they like to color with (crayons, markers or colored pencils are ideal for this project).
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
There is no formal assessment for this class. However, students will be given opportunities to share out and answering discussion questions about our topic, the butterfly life cycle. They will also complete a flip book that serves as an opportunity for them to demonstrate their understanding of the material taught during the class. This also allows the student to share what they learned with their families.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
