Phonological awareness is the precursor for learning to read and phonics is a key component of how children learn to read. Teacher led instruction gives students the foundational skills they need to read, understand, and write the words they encounter. Students will learn basic phonics, word families, consonant sounds, long vowels, and short vowel sounds. They will also learn reading strategies that will help give them tools to decode words, and use pictures to help them understand the text. They will write between 1 and 4 sentences and then illustrate their writing. The class will meet 2 times a week face to face. Students will learn from whole group instruction lead by me. Learners need to be familiar with holding books and tracking text.
