US Grade 10 - 12
This one-time, 45-minute class will discuss the history of Black Friday, recent Black Friday sales trends, and predictions for 2022. This interactive class is great for those interested in analysis, finance, entrepreneurship, or shopping. Class will start with a slide presentation discussing the history of Black Friday. When did it begin in the United States and how many other countries participate in Black Friday sales? How did it really get its name? We will then take a look how the day has evolved, discussing both changes in retailers' approach to Black Friday and changes in consumers' shopping habits. We will look at data and graphs during this discussion, and students will have the chance to analyze the data and share their opinions on what might be the cause for trends we are seeing. We’ll discuss questions, such as: How has in-store shopping changed over the last four years? Do more people plan to shop before Black Friday this year? Why might that be the case? Will shipping delays significantly impact 2021 sales? Finally, we’ll discuss how retailers and shoppers make Black Friday decisions. We’ll discuss some financial concepts important to retailers, such as revenue, margin, sell-thru, and basket-size. I enjoyed a ten-year corporate buying career, in which I made buying decisions for a national chain of more than 4,000 retail stores. Black Friday was always an exciting time! I look forward to discussing Black Friday with Outchool learners! I can be flexible with the age of this class. I also have this class available for 11-14 year olds.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from Bucknell University
I enjoyed a ten-year corporate buying career, in which I made buying decisions for a national chain of more than 4,000 retail stores in the United States. I often analyzed consumer spending and sales and profit history to determine what these stores would sell, including what items would be featured for Black Friday promotions.
