Class Experience

Each week I will open up our discussion group by talking about a current business topic, possibly from one of the recent articles that I read in my daily issue of the Wall Street Journal or weekly issue of Businessweek. That discussion will take about 15-25 minutes (see example below). Then I will ask the class what other news were making the business headlines. I will then share some of the business news headlines I have observed. When appropriate, I will share my screen and show a picture or graph that is displayed on Reuters.com. As we discuss the top business news, we will answer the questions: Who? What? When? Where? How? and Why? We will discuss the impact the news is having on society as a whole and on each of us in the discussion group. As we end the class, we will ask each person in the class what they think was the top business news item of the week.

For example, during a week in mid July, I might start the class by asking the class, "Does anyone know who Professor Sarah Gilbert is?" If no one knew, then I would explain that she was on the cover of this week's Businessweek (July 20 issue) because she leads the University of Oxford team that is working on a Covid-19 vaccine. I might then ask "where is the University of Oxford?" (answer: Oxford is in England - someone would probably know). I would say that Gilbert has been all over the British press, because her team at Oxford started a human vaccine trial for Covid-19 on 1,100 people in April. I might then ask "what is a human trial?" Then after that discussion, I might ask "does anyone know how long does it normally takes to get to the "trial" stage for a vaccine once a medical team starts working on it? After getting everyone's guesses, I would say that the article says it normally takes about five years. So that's why Oxford doing it in four months was so noteworthy, and I would explain how the Businessweek article said they were able to do it. The conversation would continue along these lines .. for example, talking about 1) how Oxford expanded the trials in May to 10,000 people in the U.K. and what they had to do to get to that stage, and then 2) how Oxford struck a deal with British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca Plc to spearhead global manufacturing and distribution to help run trials around the world, including phase III going on now in countries like Brazil, South Africa, the U.K. and soon the U.S. Also, if the vaccine proves effective, the company has lined up deals to produce more than 2 billion vaccine doses. I might ask "How easy do you think it is to scale up manufacturing of a vaccine from thousands to 2 billion?" So each week we would likely talk for 20-30 minutes on the "business story of the week." And then I would ask "what other business stories were making headlines this week?" For example, the list might include the top business news listed one day at Reuters.com:
- Wall St. climbs on stimulus, dovish Fed bets ahead of earnings rush
- Oil slips on U.S.-China tensions, rising virus cases
- RV shipments surge as Americans opt to carry home with them to avoid airports, hotels
- Auto parts makers shine spotlight on aluminium's role in electric vehicles
- Gold hits record, equities edge higher on stimulus hopes
- Facebook delays second-quarter results as Zuckerberg set to appear before Congress
- U.S. core capital goods orders, shipments accelerate in June
- Walgreens CEO to step down

My goal is to create a meaningful, comfortable, social learning environment where students discuss interesting business topics and connect with each other. The environment will be focused on being both informative and fun!

We will stay clear in the class of myself or students giving opinions on controversial subjects. Instead, we will be focusing on the business news facts for the week. If a major business news item includes someone with a controversial opinion, we will highlight that it is that person's opinion and that other people have both similar and different opinions. Business news is not normally too objectionable. However, any news discussion, even business news, can be used by someone to share their personal opinion on a controversial subject. Having worked for years in debate, where the focus is always seeing both sides of every issue, I am experienced and comfortable in handling the conversation to steer it back to the actual news instead of anyone simply sharing their opinion. My primary source for sourcing news items will be Reuters, which has been rated by Allsides as "center". Reuters is the world's largest international multimedia news agency, providing investing, world, business, technology, headline and small business news available on television, mobile and online platforms. The international news agency, based out of London, England, employs some 2500 journalists and 600 photojournalists in about 200 locations worldwide. Reuters journalists are subject to the Reuters Handbook of Journalism as a guide for fair presentation and disclosure of relevant interests. Their guide dictates to "take a 'value-neutral approach' so that employees act with integrity, independence and freedom from bias".

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, my name is David (aka Coach David Anthony). I am a Certified Teacher with a Masters Degree from Stanford University and an Honors Bachelors Degree from the University of Southern California.

I am excited to join your Outschooler on a journey to understand and work towards excellence in speaking, debating, and/or business life skills for success. I love to share my knowledge, experience, and passion here at Outschool by teaching 15-20 speech and debate classes every week. For a few students looking to improve so much that they can successfully compete in speech or debate tournaments, I also tutor them one-on-one.

My goal for Outschool student learners is to first inform them so that they become aware of the key subject matter, then do activities and exercises to boost their excitement and potential and help them understand what it takes to achieve their class goals. Along the way, I give direction and encouragement so that they can understand, perform, and develop passion about their abilities to excel in the subjects that I teach.

What can you expect in my classes? My classes are designed to bring out the best in student learners – to help them understand the key concepts and then engage with them so that they can improve their skills with confidence. We will have fun and yet learn how to excel at the same time! I have lived my life trying to be the best that I can be and I love helping students become the best that they can be!

I have significant education and experience in the subjects that I teach here at Outschool. In addition to teaching here at Outschool, I am an online Teacher for students learning Speech, Debate, English, and Reading. I also Tutor students one-on-one online in these subjects. I was the lead advisor for the Corona High School Speech & Debate Club in Southern California. I have a Masters degree from Stanford University (MBA Business) and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California (BA, Economics and International Political Science with a specialization of China and East Asia). I graduated with Honors in the top 2% of my college class in scholarship, leadership and service. I was a member of the U.S.C. Debate Squad; our speech team was ranked #1 in the nation out of all colleges in the country. I was in a total of 15 musicals/plays during school, winning my school's "Benny Award" for the overall Best Actor. I was a Coach member of The National Speech and Debate Association, the organization that provides the infrastructure and resources for speech and debate competitions around the world.

I had a very successful business career, have spoke publicly to groups of 10-100+ people hundreds of times, have visited 32 different countries (lived in four countries), have over 12 years experience teaching kids in High School and Middle School, and enjoy my life here in southern California with my wife and daughter (she is now in high school). Now I am helping learners here at Outschool achieve their potential with passion and perseverance (the two qualities so critical for life success).

Please join me and let's begin a new adventure together!
