Class Experience

We will speak a little about the concept of floating and buoyancy, using images and asking questions. Then, using the scientific method, which we will discuss, the students will hypothesize on if various objects will sink or float, we will keep a record of their hypothesis. Once we have all of the educated guesses, I will demonstrate the objects being dropped into the water and we will discuss why our hypothesis was correct or incorrect. Then students will do the hands on experiment of making modeling clay into a shape that floats, and I will explain how large boats use the same concept (using water surface tension) as our clay boats to float.

Learning Goals

Students will be exposed to the scientific method and use creative thinking to design a clay boat. Students should come away with a better understanding of how buoyancy works.

Other Details

Supply List
pencil
paper (lined or blank is fine)
Mixing bowl
Water
Modeling clay (not playdough, or model magic clay)
cheap modeling clay is fine, should cost no more than $3-5 depending on the amount, we don't need a lot, I've seen it at craft stores, grocery stores, and sometimes dollar stores. It should seem heavy and waxy.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Welcome!
I am a bit of a Jane of all trades. I am currently offering simple art and science lessons for children age 6-12. I hope to add some writing and history lessons soon.
I have a love for all kinds of learning. I have a BA in Theater Set and Properties production, and a minor in Museum studies. I was on my schools robotics team and learned basics of engineering and mechanics. I perfected my life long art skills with professional training in theater design and production, as well as learning writing, teaching and research skills for my museum exhibit training. I fell in love with the simple science lessons that my grandfather, who was a middle school science teacher, and mother would do with my cousins and I every summer. My favorite past time is visiting museums and science centers to learn about history, art, culture, and science. My desired career was to be an museum educator and exhibit creator. I spent several wonderful years working in a history museum, making exhibits and teaching history, and a children's museum teaching science. Then I developed severe Chronic Nerve Pain in my face at age 24. I learned a new set of skills, patience, compassion, and problem solving. I eventually had to give up my museum career, but I was able to continue my love for learning and find great comfort in studying all sorts of things and practicing my art. I paint my pain areas directly on my face to raise awareness of my condition, and to have a creative outlet for my trials. I am grateful to Outschool for giving me a place to teach my passions in my home where I can best manage my pain. I believe all people young and old can benefit from learning and developing their passions.
