Class Experience
In this one time introductory class about bullying, we will use slides, a light-hearted video, and interactive worksheets and a find and seek game. Learners will understand what a Bully is, discussing the definition, and how a person acts, actions, of a younger-aged Bully. We will discuss that a Bully can be mean and hurtful on purpose and mostly repetitious actions; and, about making bad choices and what would be the good choices. (For example: A bad choice is when a bully trips someone at...
Learners will understand what a Bully is, generic examples of how a Bully acts and the types (verbal & briefly on physical - pushing, shoving, tripping), and be empowered with the knowledge to prevent or stop Bullying as an Upstander and a Bully Buster. Learners will be encourage to be kind to a prior Bully and remember the 6 stars in achieving a Bully Buster certificate.
As a home educator for nearly 2 decades it has always been a high priority to teach acceptance and to not tolerate bullying in any form. As a 4-H leader it was my goal to teach and practice acceptance, volunteerism, and kindness and we did in every aspect of the club, even if a known bully joined. As a parent, my son (attending public school) had been bullied in school for an extended period of time until we learned about it. We learned together about the bully and began to show him kindness and respect as we understood him more and more. It turned his life around - as the bully had not been taught - the 2 boys are now friends. I have educational experience as well as a personal experience.
OPTIONAL: Learn the word and what it means: Upstander - a person who stands up, speaks out (tells a trusted adult), and/or takes action (if safe to do so) to help someone being targeted by a bully
Learners will NOT need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools. "Raise hand" - Zoom offers a way for students to digitally raise their hands. Students can click the ‘Participants‘ button to expand the participants panel. At the bottom of this panel, there is a button called “raise hand.” Students can use this button to get my attention if they are muted. We mute the class because there is often times feedback from different mics and noises in the background that can make it a challenge to hear clearly. Headsets work well, but not required. A quiet background, a quiet place in home, truly helps all who are in the class to hear and is super-duper appreciated.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
