Building Vocabulary in Second Grade, Charleston Progress Academy

In this class the students will develop strategies to build their knowledge of vocabulary on a second-grade level.

Assessment
I will complete informal assessments throughout the lessons. First, during the students' active engagement at the beginning of the lesson. Then, during the middle of the lesson within building words for spelling, reading, and writing. At the end of the lesson, I will be assessing the students completed assignments and tasks along with their continue assignment assigned.

Class Experience

US Grade 2
In this class, the students will develop strategies for building their vocabulary on a second-grade level. The lessons will be presented through the skills-based model of instruction. The lessons will reflect a range of the language, common core state standards for second grade level. Students will implement new strategies. To develop a stronger reading vocabulary. With phonemic awareness and decoding skills. 

     Each class students will be presented with a new vocabulary list. To develop understanding of new words. The students will apply new strategies, such as reading words in context, multiple meanings, and word structure. 

   The following vocabulary lessons will be presented through a Power Point lesson using Google Slides to complete. Our class assignments.

Learning Goals
The student will develop vocabulary Acquisition and Use to determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies.
a. Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
b. Determine the meaning of the new word formed when a known prefix is added to a known word (e.g., happy/unhappy,
tell/retell).
c. Use a known root word as a clue to the meaning of an unknown word with the same root (e.g., addition, additional).
d. Use knowledge of the meaning of individual words to predict the meaning of compound words (e.g., birdhouse. lighthouse. housefly; bookshelf. notebook, bookmark).

    As an elementary and special education classroom teacher, I have taught Vocabulary strategies, Word study and phonemic awareness through multi-sensory approach using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic methods.  I have a level 2 certificate in the Wilson Fundations level 2 program. The program I taught was a school wide program and intervention program as well. I have seen students achieve success and growth with implementing programs that offer the multi-sensory approach in word study and phonemic awareness.
