Building Social Skills Through Read Alouds ( Ongoing for 6-9 Year Olds)
This weekly ongoing Social Skills class begins with a quick check in, read aloud, followed up with discuss and practice of the social skill embedded in story and concludes with an at home activity to encourage practice through the week.

Beginner Level
Is your child easily frustrated, quick to quit, struggling to gain skills to preservere through the struggle of learning life social skills. In this fun course your child will join me for engaging read alouds, group discussions, role playing games and hands on activities. What they'll learn: What is mindfulness and how to embrace challenges, learn how to flip negative thoughts, recognize their strengths, set goals, manage emotions, and so much more. This ongoing course will be divided into 6 week sessions. Each focusing on one social emotional concept allowing your child to continue for many sessions with no repeated lessons. Topics covered will include: Growth Mindset, Doing Your Best, Achieving Excellence, Encouraging Others, Never Giving Up, Empathy and Caring. Through these topics we will understand our emotions, strengths and confidence, importance of honesty, goal setting, self-management, coping skills, impulse control, respect, gratitude, kindness, friendships, communication, apologizing, teamwork and conflict resolution. How the course works: Class will begin with a Welcome & Check-In through a variety of fun ways to express how we’re feeling today. Then we will Listen to a read aloud Story recording. Next we will Discuss & Explore through Guided questions to help learners connect to the topic. Followed by Hands-On Learning that ranges from Role-playing, drawing, games, or SEL exercises. Finally end with a Wrap-Up & Takeaway – A simple practice learners can use at home to reinforce your child's learning. Most importantly, students and parents will have the opportunity to provide the teacher feedback and ask any questions about their individual child's struggles with topics allowing me to help parents raise confident, resilient problem solvers. Teaching Style: I love to help everyone feel welcome and make learning fun by keeping things exciting and energetic. Interaction: Participation is encouraged so you will get lots of chances to participate and share your thoughts. Lessons will revolve around an engaging live read aloud, fun slides and engaging discussions to keep it fun for everyone. The course will be ongoing but can be joined at anytime. Each 6 week session will be focus on one topic, new students can join anytime there are no prerequisites. Learning Goals

I recently retired after teaching for 33 years. The first 7 years I taught kindergarten and all the remaining were at the 2nd grade level. I have a B.S. in Human Development, minor in Psychology along with Teacher certification birth-3rd grade. I also earned a Masters Degree in Elementary Education in which I focused on building community in a classroom, fostering resiliency in students and developing strong social emotional learners.
