Description

Class Experience

Students will improve their ability to sit sit in one spot and read the whole time by learning strategies to increase their reading stamina and practicing these strategies.
I have a bachelors degree in Elementary Education.
I am certified to teach in grades k-6.
I am also Reading Endorsed and ESOL (English as a second language) Endorsed.
This is my 8th year of teaching. I have taught first, second, and fifth grade.
Students are encouraged to continue to practice reading independently throughout the week.

Your child will need: -3-5 books that are interesting to your child and preferable on their reading level -paper -crayons -pencil -5,10, and/or 20 minute sand timer (optional) this is not needed for class but will be beneficial for your child when they practice building their stamina at home. Many children are even using "Alexa" as their reading stamina timer now. I like students to have a timer in front of them so that, they can see how much time they've been working.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will make anecdotal notes while students are reading independently. After each class I will email each parent and let them know the strengths of their child's reading ability and what they can work on at home grow in reading independently.
25 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
To build reading stamina students must not have any "external factors" influencing their ability to sit and read a book. This means that parents can not intervene if a student is not reading their book while they build their stamina. If a parent or teacher encourages or gives them any external reward while they build their stamina then they will not be building the skills needed to actually read independently. I will be observing each student as they read and providing feedback for them reflect about and work on when we build our stamina again.
