Class Experience
In this individual student-focused session, we will focus on the student’s goals and expectations as they plan for their next big steps. In this session topics can include we talk through college logistics, resources, major exploration, how current experiences can be used in the college planning experience, and any other aspect of college planning. College is a big step, so we will begin discussing their “why” and how they hope that entering higher education will be the next steps to their goals. We will then discuss what are concerns and challenges that the student does anticipate, that will determine what we may need to spend more time on. When working with students, I like to take a practical and solution-based approach. My goal as an instructor is for students to leave knowing that they have options and though certain aspects of the college transition may be difficult, there is a way through it. Also in our session, we will discuss what college logistics really matter to the student. This includes location, college size, program availability, resources, cost of living, growth and internship opportunities, and other factors that contribute to the college selection process. The purpose of this process is to ensure the student has an understanding of what college fits them and their needs. We will then discuss how the students’ current academic and extracurricular activities can have a big influence prior to and during their college experience. To end our session, the student will set goals and create an action plan to work towards to achieve these goals. This does not have to be a one-time session, I am available to meet with in other sessions to pick up where we left off. Whatever we come up with in this session is completely tentative as we know circumstances and life changes impact many decisions.
