In this course, students will develop fact fluency in addition, subtraction, and place value, which are essential concepts in elementary mathematics. It is important for students to have ample time to explore and understand these ideas while progressing toward fluency. While recognizing that it is the same as 7 + 9, and to reason that if 9 + 7 = 16, then 16 - 9 = 7. Students who establish these connections and appreciate their significance are on the right path in math. Furthermore, when given opportunities to solve problems independently, students enhance their critical problem-solving skills and build confidence in their mathematical reasoning. At the beginning of each class, the teacher and students will engage in a discussion about the week's topic(s) to assess prior knowledge. During the lesson, the teacher will implement the “I Do, We Do, You Do” method to introduce and teach the topic(s). This method starts with the teacher demonstrating an example, followed by collaborative problem-solving, and concludes with students tackling a problem independently, with support as needed. Each class will include a combination of instruction, practice, and application through word problems. Homework and review materials may be offered after class on a voluntary basis. Students who opt to complete the homework can expect to spend approximately 15-20 minutes per week on these assignments.
