Student will learn about the Pangaea and geological terms, and, if time allows, about different types of governments and social structures. They will learn about creating imaginary beings & thinking outside the box by starting storytelling not with plot or character, but with location. They will walk away with a fully formed world they can use for many future storytelling adventures. There is also a confidence building a world from scratch and having complete ownership of that world.
I have been teaching world-building for twenty-five years for schools, libraries, conferences, and festivals across North America, and have been specifically teaching imaginary worlds at Capilano University's summer kids camp for 15 years as well as through multiple Artist-in-the-Schools programs. My fantasy adventure series Faerie Tales from the White Forest takes place in a completely imaginary world, so I honed my world-building skills over time. Due to tight school schedules while on book tour, I developed a way to move quickly through the world-building process in a manner that is almost magical and certainly inspiring. I love teaching this class. Each world is so unique, and students are tickled by the results.
Whatever creative task the student doesn't finish in the allotted time should be finished at home. Really, they can work at their own pace and how much they want to put into their new world is up to them, however they should complete all the exercises before joining the second course.
