Class Experience

Students enjoy my Imaginary World Building workshops due to the way they are quickly engaged in the creative process. No prior background knowledge or experience is necessary, however I do offer a one-hour "Intro to Building Imaginary Worlds" workshop if your student wants to get an idea of what we cover.

In this 5 day world-building class, I deliver hands-on experience through creative exercises to guide students through their own creative processes. Students create their own imaginary worlds from scratch, populate them with fantastic creatures, and use their worlds as a jumping off point for storytelling. This course can be a fun, self-contained activity, or the imagined world can be used later for creative writing or game design. There are endless ways to develop these worlds after the workshop is over, and I offer a follow up class called Building Imaginary Worlds II: Into the Wild Unknown if they'd like to develop their world further in a class setting.

The steps in the process are:
•	Using the theory of Pangaea (super continent) students create a map of their world
•	Geological features (imaginary and otherwise) are added to their maps
•	Students select a "Main Civilization" on which to focus their energies (other inhabitants & civilizations are developed in BIWII)
•	A secondary "insert map" of the Main Civilization is developed
•	A "sacred place" is created that might be threatened or needed to reach for help (a "quest")

Learning Goals

Students will learn about the Pangaea, geological terms, and landforms. They will learn about creating imaginary beings & thinking outside the box by starting storytelling not with plot or character, but with LOCATION. They will walk away with their very own world they can use for many future storytelling adventures. There is also a confidence building a world from scratch and having complete ownership of that world.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching world-building for twenty-five years for schools, libraries, conferences, and festivals across North America, and have been specifically teaching imaginary worlds at Capilano University's summer kids camp for 15 years as well as through multiple Artist-in-the-Schools programs. My fantasy adventure series Faerie Tales from the White Forest takes place in a completely imaginary world, so I honed my world-building skills over time. Due to tight school schedules while on book tour, I developed a way to move quickly through the world-building process in a manner that is almost magical and certainly inspiring. I love teaching this class. Each world is so unique, and students are tickled by the results.
